Why adjustable dampers are recommended for robot end-of-arm impact
Impact energy at the robot wrist changes with payload and speed. This note explains the two-chamber design of adjustable dampers and a three-step sizing method by absorbed energy and cycle rate.
At the robot wrist, impact energy equals mass x speed squared over two; changeovers and acceleration tuning shift the real energy away from design values. A fixed-orifice damper either bottom out (too low) or recovers slowly (too high).
Adjustable dampers (e.g. the ACE MC series) change the orifice area with an external adjusting ring, covering roughly 4-8x the energy range and matching new production in two minutes.
Sizing in three steps: 1) calculate effective weight and impact speed; 2) pick the size band from the absorbed-energy chart; 3) verify heat dissipation against cycles per minute. Send us your conditions for a free calculation.
